The shadow moved so fast he lost it. He searched, waved his light about. It caught one fleeting image of his wife’s body swept up like a toy, arms limp, long brown hair flying.
The shadow enfolded her like a blanket. There were heavy, bass-note footfalls on the bank, and then…
Nothing.

Monster

There’s one word that sums up this book perfectly: intense. After the halfway point of the book, I could not stop reading. Also note that this is for more mature readers; I’ll get into why later. Now, onto the review!

Plot

Some monsters are real.

Reed and Rebecca didn’t plan to encounter a living nightmare. They didn’t plan for a monster to kidnap Rebecca—and they certainly didn’t plan all the chaos that followed.

But it all happened.

That night leaves Reed with the unmistakable image of some creature carrying off his wife. The mournful howls of their hunter still haunt him

Meanwhile, another couple investigates a string of mysterious killings. Each leave the victims in horribly brutalized conditions. The answer seems to be something unbelievable.

The plot of Monster will leave you turning pages as fast as possible, and glued to the words until the thrilling conclusion. You’ll be left guessing on the killer’s identity until the very end.

Characters

The characters of Monster are interesting, though not as developed as other books. A note in the back says the author realizes through a more “cinematic” style, showing their reactions to things to know more about them.

Monster is written from a cinematic approach. We learn about the characters by watching how they react in different situations.

Theme and Spiritual Application

The reasons this is a more mature book are two, mainly: The intensity and eeriness of some scenes, and the violent deaths the monster’s victims die.

This book covers the Theory of Evolution. One of the characters speaks with a few Evolutionists. They discuss genetics and beneficial mutations while he tracks down the killer monster.

Reed and Rebecca are both Christians, as are a few other of the characters. Characters will pray regularly, and Rebecca becomes bitter with God for putting her in her plight.

Overall

I liked this book, and it kept my continuous attention for several hours. It’s suspenseful writing left me on the edge of my seat the entire time.
